Hi,
I'm booked on the Wildlife and Moghuls trip flying out on 14th Sept and be great to hear from anyone else on the trip. I'm travelling solo and just wondered if anyone wanted to meet up for a drink at Heathrow before we fly out? Only a few weeks to go...all v exciting!

Hi Sarah- Jane

I am booked on this trip too, so I am delighted to hear that I am not on my own. Been trying to make contact with someone since I booked back in January.

I guess we will be at the airport hours before so happy to meet up with you and any others going. It will be good to meet before we get to India. Really looking forward to this now and gradually getting all my kit together - can't wait.

Look forward to meeting you!

Hi S-J

I think you are right about travelling light as I am not sure how much bag carrying we will have to do ourselves. I am planning to get lots of cheap t-shirts that I can leave behind (don't like washing). The locals will probably be glad of them anyway. Like you, I have always wanted to visit India so glad I am having the chance now.

A lot of my jabs were up to date from other trips but I have an appointment later today for stage 2 of Rabies and Japanese Encephalitis. Had Hep B last week. I guess I am over cautious really. I think malaria tabs are essential from what I have been told and read.

What currency are you taking? Are dollars best? Do you know what sort of travel adaptor will be required? Where in the UK are you travelling from? Sorry about all the questions!

Thanks

Steve

Hi S-J

Yes there does seem to be an over-reaction with the swine flu and I wonder if there are any more cases than there would be of normal flu at any given time?

I am at Peacehaven in Sussex (by the sea) and will be driving up and have arranged airport parking for the duration. Not taking walking boots, although I did think about it. Just taking comfortable walking shoes as I think we may be on the go for quite long times but not actually walking too far, I hope.

Really looking forward to seeing all the sights and just being somewhere totally different for a bit will be great. How's your Hindu?

Hi S-J

Got my final details today so suspect you probably have as well? It's very exciting and not long to go now.

I have had a look at our hotel for the first night in Delhi and it looks quite reasonable, with air con which is good news. Also logged on to the Virgin website where if you enter the ticket reference you can look at our flight details including choosing seats.

If you would like to sit together let me know and we can prebook these? I think the next couple of weeks may go very, very slowly!!

Hi S-J

What are you like? Going on holiday before you go on holiday!

It is quite easy to book your seat. Just enter your E-ticket reference and you can open up a plan. I have booked seat 61A so if you book 61C we will be together. (there is no 61B). I have left the return journey as I am sure you will have had enough of me by then.

Instructions are to arrive at least 3 hours before to check in, so I will be aiming to arrive 6.30 to 7.00 pm. Then its just hanging around so can meet up then if you like.

Going shopping this weekend for the last of my kit - hopefully. Have you checked the weather in Delhi yet? It is still very warm with temperatures about 35 each day.

Look forward to meeting you in a couple of weeks!

Hi S-J

Did you not get a letter saying that our flights had changed and we are now flying with Virgin leaving at 22.00 hrs? That would explain why you have not been able to book your seat online. My letter is dated 21st July.

Not taking sterilisation tablets with me as I have got a clever water bottle that apparently you can put dirty river water in, give it a shake, and minutes later you have safe water to drink. Don't think I will be trying that out but I will put all drinking water through it just in case.

I have a couple of power adaptors which should cover most eventualities but I am sure we can buy these there if we need.

Counting the days now and it is going quite quickly and it is a short working week this week which helps. Trying to think what I may have forgotten - there is bound to be something. Must try to learn a little bit of the lingo before I get there. My Indian friend tells me that they do not have the word please and not to shake hands with women! Going to be fun I think.

See ya

Hi S-J

Sorry if I caused a panic but it seems a bit strange having different flights. Any way, you will be in India before me now!

Yes I go from Terminal 3 as well. I have been trying to learn a few words of Hindu and can now order 2 beers (do biyar)

Just over a week to go now so see you very soon.

Nameste!

Hi Steve,

It's not that far away now is it?! I've sorted some kit out but I'm mindful of travelling light as I'm only taking a fairly small bag. I was originally booked onto a trip to Cambodia but that got cancelled a couple of months ago so I switched to this trip. I'm quite pleased actually as India has always been on my 'must do' list. Have you been before? Just getting the last of my vaccinations next week. Are you taking malaria tablets? I was told by the nurse that I didn't need them but I have my doubts.

Once we have all the flight details etc we can arrange a meeting place/watering hole at the airport! Glad I'll have met someone before I get to Delhi!

Take care, happy packing!

Hi Steve,

According to the nurse (and she did show me the current info on the internet while I was there as I questioned her!) the risk in northern India from malaria is really low at the moment. I can only go on what she's said I guess and just be careful and cover up! Like you, a lot of my jabs were up to date from other trips but I needed to refresh my hep b. I don't think we'll ever be miles from some sort of civilisation/medical support so we should be ok. As long as we don't arrive with swine flu.....! Is it just me or has everyone gone mad about that. It's not even that serious if you're fit and healthy!

I think I'll probably take stirling to change up. I figure if I change from pounds/dollars/rupees I'll lose out twice if the exchange rate is rubbish (or am I just tight!?). I might take a small amount of dollars as back up though. Gosh, I hadn't thought about the travel plug yet. I've got a worldwide one so that should be ok. Have to consult my trusty lonely planet later!

I'm travelling from Chesham in Bucks so not too far from Heathrow. What about you?

Are you taking walking/hiking boots? I thought about it but they're heavy and also really hot to wear. Think I might just take some walking type trainers and of course trusty flip flops for walking to the showers.

Can't wait to try all the food out there either, I love Indian food. Have to make sure I stock up on tummy tablets though just in case.

Speak soon,

Hi Steve,

Yep, I returned from a last minute trip to Spain with the other half yesterday (much needed dose of sun!) to find all my documents ready and waiting for me at home. Very exciting, and not at all long now! But you're right, I think the time will drag a bit from here in. I'm kinda a little bit nervous too but I think that's usual when I go somewhere totally new.
If you're booking your seats in advance anyway then it may be worth booking them together. Is it straightforward or do you need to give loads of details? I'm going to be getting to the airport pretty early as I'm being dropped off and Dad wants to miss the rush hour traffic on the M25.

Hi Steve,

I know...I'm terrible for my holidays- my bank manager hates me!!

I had a go at booking my seat online late last night but I think I'm a total dunce and/or was v tired but I couldn't figure out how to do it. Which section of the jet star website did you go to to do it? I think I'll be getting to the airport at about 5.30pm (the flight is 8.45pm I believe), I'm always way too early for these sorts of things! As long as I have a book and can find somewhere to have a cheeky beer then I'm happy!

Couple of kit questions, are you taking water sterilization tablets with you? A few people have said I should to be on the safe side, even with the bottled water. Also, did you find out which adapter plug to get? I want to be able to charge up my cameras batteries when I'm out there.

Not long now...can't wait!

See you on the 14th,

Hi Steve,

You had me worried for a moment there as my flight details are still with jet airways and not virgin. I phoned the adventure co just to check I had the right details and it appears we're on different flights. Oh well, I'm sure we can meet up at some point at the airport if we're at the same terminal. I think I'm flying out of terminal 3. You?

Sounds like you've got some hi-tec kit! I think I might get some sterilization tabs just in case. Still haven't written a packing list but I will do this weekend. Can't believe it's only 10 days away! Getting more excited/nervous each day!

Have a good weekend!

Hi Steve,

Don't worry, I wasn't too worried and when I called up they were really helpful. Maybe we could meet up in T3 departure lounge for a drink? Maybe 7pm or is that too early for you? I think most of the people on the trip are on the earlier flight so I might be able to round up another person or two if they have the adventure co tags on their bags so I can spot them!

I think you will have to be the official translator- I'm a bit rubbish with languages but I do a good line in smiling and pointing!

Speak to you soon, good luck with the packing!

S-J
