I'm also doing this trek. Absolutely no experience either, I guess there's a first time for everything. It's nice to hear from someone else on this departure.
I'm currently assembling all the recommended kit from the trip notes, and wondering whether to invest in a down jacket rather than hiring one (which may be of questionable quality) from Kathmandu. I know someone who's done high-altitude trekking before, and he's recommended the warm yet compact stuff as far as kit goes.
Everything seems to be going okay thus far equipment and fitness wise. Since I live right next to the Lake District, it's making training a breeze! I've been talking to various people about gear and the main pointers I've got so far include usefulness of warm, compact clothing for high altitudes and the importance of wearing decent footwear with a single pair of socks (doubling-up socks is a good way to get blisters, y'know)
As far as health/medicine goes. I talked with a few experts who, along with the guidelines, don't reckon that we'll need malaria meds - it's confined to the low-lying areas of Nepal, the same goes for Japanese Encephalitis. I've had trouble getting hold of the rabies vaccine, which my doctor recommended. Seems to be a national shortage, so I'll just endeavour not to get bitten by any rabid animals in the first place.
I've decided against malaria and rabies vaccines, both of which I was advised wouldn't be necessary. I guess we'll both be dodging any rabid animals!
I'm planning to hire a sleeping bag in Kathmandu, as well as a down jacket, although I've spoken to people who went later in the year than we're going who've suggested that I might not need to get one until we reach Namche, where they said you can also hire stuff.
Training wise I'm just trying to walk everywhere at the moment (in my boots) and we're doing Ben Nevis at the weekend - I wanted to do the three peaks before this trip so did Scafell in May, Snowdon in June and Ben Nevis will complete the three. I don't feel super fit but I'm hoping all will be ok. I guess the altitude will be the real challenge, and I'm hoping to get some diamox this week which will hopefully help.
Overall, nervous but mainly excited!
I've decided against diamox, and I'm really hoping I don't regret this! I think I'm of a like mind fitness-wise - I'm sure we don't have to be superhuman.
Managed to find a 4-season sleeping bag that packs down to about 20 x 20cms for pretty cheap in a local store so I leapt on it, along with an inner sheet. I thought I'd splash out on a down jacket, since it's something I'll probably use a lot.
What's everyone doing about money? Just taking sterling/travellers checks? Any Dollars or Indian Rupees? I know the Nepalese rupee isn't a particularly hard currency, so I'm still a little unsure, I thought I might take sterling and pick up some of the local currency once I'm there.
Nervousness and excitement in equal measures for me too. It all seems so much more real since I booked my train journey down to Heathrow.
My name's Tim, by the way. I'm guessing yours is Rebecca?
It sounds like you're pretty well prepared kit-wise. I didn't think I'd get much use out of a sleeping bag but you never know, I might get a taste for it after this and end up buying one afterwards.
I don't think diamox is really necessary, but I thought I'd get some just in case. Friends who've been said they didn't need to start taking it until quite late into the trip, and some not at all.
As far as money's concerned, I was just going to take sterling (cash) and exchange once we're over there.
Will probably get a lift to Heathrow - shall we try to meet up there?
And yes, I'm Rebecca!
Yeah. That sounds good. I'll be arriving at heathrow at about half 1 to account for the inevitable train delays. I'll be the guy hanging glumly around the departure lounge in a suitably bored fashion. (truthfully, I should probably add my mobile number, I know that heathrow's a big place. It's o7895 4o5o19 - just substitute the os for 0s) thanks for the reassurance about diamox. I'm trusting to the gradual ascent that I'll be fine. But I'm now tempted to look into it for peace of mind.
Thanks for the number. I'll get in touch at some point soon - hope you don't mind a few extra questions I'm bound to come up with. Ben Nevis at the weekend was great. We made it to the summit and it was hopefully good training. Not long to go now!
No problem, feel free :). Extra questions are fine - I can't promise to know the answers though! Sounds like the training's going well, I was going to go out last weekend but I decided that it was probably more important to get the last of my shopping for the trip out the way.
I did a bit of maths with the suggested figures for money, and came up with a (generous) figure of about £350 that we'd need for the trip. That's a lot of money to be carrying at once! Did you have a figure in mind for the cash you'll be taking?
I was wondering exactly the same thing! I'll drop you a quick text now then perhaps we can arrange a time to chat?
Hi there guys, im also on this trip. Reading your chat has answerd a few questions for me. I have plumped for a down jacket and sleeping bag. I am taking a few $ as well as pounds on advise of guide book, but no real idea of what will be best. I am rather excited at the moment with slight trepadation and an underlying current of fear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi there! Fear has almost overtaken excitement this weekend for me, but I've bought a few more bits and bobs and am feeling a bit more organised. Planning to hire down jacket and sleeping bag over there, but have a nice sleeping bag liner. How's training been going? If you fancy a chat before we go, or to arrange meeting up at heathrow, I'm on 07590 719716.
It's good to see I'm not the only one who can't decide on what to bring! I'm hiring a down jacket out there too, and I reckon bringing sterling and a few dollars I have lying around will be OK. Is anyone else getting a visa when they arrive? My number is 07955 050131
