Elephant Paradise

Welcome Guest, to make a post on the forum you need to login or register.

Hi,
Me and my 2 boys are booked on the Elephant Paradise trip, we're travelling out a few days early to acclimatise and we're really looking forward to it. My boys are 12 and 10 years old. We'd love to hear from anyone else going on the trip or those who have been previously with any top tips.
Cheers
Helen

Hi Helen. Is that the Sri Lanka trip? In which case we did it this time last year. I was a single parent travelling with a 12 year old boy and a 13 year old girl. The trip was great in most respects. We met 2 lovely families. I hadn't realised we would be spending almost every waking hour together but we were lucky to make some new now dear friends. The down side was the fact that we had a problem with our guides. Very efficent and knew there stuff however they very Inappropriately came on to our girls. Too long to go in to now and one could argue our 13 year olds had long blond hair were good looking and looked older than their age. Thank goodness my daughter told me( the guides were early 40s ) but it wasn't nice. Made worse by the guides reaction when challenged about it. The other two dads were almost ready to punch them. I tackled it head on one to one but was trying to do so in a way that didn't ruin everyone's hols oven it was Easter Sunday and we were camping up a mountain. They didnt seem to grasp the seriousness of their behaviour even when we explained in England men who look at girls of 13 and try it on are paedophiles. As we were in middle of nowhere and 2 days til end of hols we as a group of 16 decided to stay together and tackle it soon as we returned. The companies response was to sack all 3 or so they said when we expressed that it was 2 of them not the third. They then offered a small discount on next hols.. Which in reality is the discount given to loyal customers they offer. The other fathers decided they would never again use this company. It was such a shame as it really was the holiday of a life time but it could have been different if our girls hadn't spoken to us. We trusted them and felt it ok to leave teenagers by campfire up mountain when we went o bed in tents near by. Lesson learnt. Enjoy your hols but keep an eye on kids at all times which we pretty much did as i tend to be more cautious I don't blame the company as such because it was. Fab trip and it is possible that out of hundreds of staff you could have a dodgy one but their response was a bit disappointing. I am sure you will have the trip of a life time but forewarned is forearmed. Hopefully the problem was dealt with but I have no sure way of knowing that and I hate the fact of well educated responsible guides taking advantages with other teenagers as it could result in a very different outcome to ours. Best wishes deanna

Hi Helen and Deanna

I would like to start by saying that we were horrified when we first heard about the situation on Deanna's trip.

The staff concerned had never had any such comments in the past.

We take allegations of such behaviour very seriously and discussed the matter with the tour guide. Following this discussion the tour guide was sacked, along with the other 2 staff members on the trip. They claimed that comments made to the girls were 'a joke' and were not intended to be taken seriously. We felt that even assuming the comments were made as a joke, it was a gross error of judgement. We felt that all 3 staff members had to be dismissed as none of them challenged the comments being made, or contacted us at the time to advise us that this had happened.

I would like to assure you both that we have not had any similar claims made against our staff since this incident (either in Sri Lanka, or on other trips around the world).

I am sorry you were unhappy with our response at the time Deanna. I am happy to discuss this again with you. Please feel free to email me at sean.hughes@adventurecompany.co.uk

I am sure you will have a great time on your trip in July Helen. If you would like to discuss any aspect of the trip, including Deanna's comments, please give me a call on 0845 450 5310.

Kind regards

Wow, Deanna, I'm really sorry you had such a horrible experience. We went on a trip with The Adventure Company last summer to Turkey and had a great time. As a single parent, the reason I am attracted to these trips is because I feel I can do activities and go to places which I wouldn't feel able or comfortable by myself with children. This is (I hope) to be a holiday of a lifetime due to an inheritance I have recently had and so your comments are, to me personally, really concerning as our expectations are very high. I suppose I am "lucky" that I have 2 boys so are, perhaps, less likely to attract unwanted attention. I have a real sunken feeling in my stomach now, after all the excitement of booking the trip and I will be phoning Sean to discuss these concerns. Thanks for the heads up, I hope you are planning a nice trip this summer.
Cheers

Hi Helen,
Which departure date are you on? We are going on 14th July which I think is probably the same trip. We have an 11 year old son and an 8 year old daughter. We haven't been on a holiday with The Adventure Company before. Last year was our first try of a holiday of this type with Explore to Nicaragua and it was brilliant. Expecting same sort of thing with this trip and we are really looking forward to it.
Let me know if it is the same trip. If so, I am delighted my son will have boys of a similar age to befriend.
All the best,
Nadine

Hi Helen; we're going out on the 21st, which I think is your trip. We are two families: Martin and Frances and our daughter, 15 and son, 14, and our friend Denise with her 16 year old daughter and 14 and 10(ish!) year old sons. We're really looking forward to it. The girls are both keen photographers and we're all elephant fans! Just filling out all the visa stuff... Frances

Hi Frances,
This is the same trip as us, we are going out a few days earlier to chill by the pool and get used to the time difference (well that's my excuse anyway). We are really looking forward to it too, it's exciting that its just a couple of months away now, hopefully these will fly by. It looks like my boys will have similar aged boys to keep them company and give me a bit of a break. Really looking forward to meeting you all and sharing lots of adventures with you. I've done the visas but now for the vaccinations....

Hi Helen,

We've just started the vaccinations thing - a bit of a shock in terms of time and costs! The kids had four jabs, two in each arm. It turns out that we hadn't left enough time for them to be fully covered for Hep B for our departure, although we can have the "accelerated" sequence of jabs. We've all had typhoid, tetanus, Hep B and will soon have Hep A. Have to go elsewhere for Japanese Encephalitis. We were going to have to pay £50 per jab for 3 jabs for each of us for rabies, but got a tip-off about this site www.bcftravelclub.net/index.php which we're going to sign up for instead. Should be belt and braces for the Hep B too.

How lovely to go out early, and what a good idea! We'll join you on the 22nd. It'll be a blast!

Frances
