Feluccas & Pharaohs - Family Holiday

Different highlights for each of us.  My son liked the camel ride, I liked the temples.

[Least enjoyed] The Mosquitos and the hotel in Cairo. I'm sure the brochure said there weren't many Mosquitos but we've never been so badly bitten. Would have preferred an extra night at one of the nice hotels to another night in cairo

Really good bloke, he exceeded expectations and added value to the holiday.

elephant riding
local guide and assistant

[Least enjoyed] some accomadation below what I expected
hanging around for internal flights ( due to weather)
city tour wasnt great ( although our wife had given us a tour the previous day as she had been there two weeks early so maybe she had done the best bits)

we were in teahouses whilst treking so didnt have  particularly high expectations but some could have been better

delighted to hear himalayan encounters helps remove litter from the treks in the closed season

hotels shunted us around although local group leader tried to sort it out

very enjoyable with him, he did a great job

Himalayan Adventure

Seeing the Himalayas
Our excellent guide'Kush'

[Least enjoyed] Leaving the beauty of the Himalayas and finishing the tour with Kathmandu sight seeing. We would have preferred to have done the sight seeing at the beginning and come straight back from Chitwan and gone home.

WE were very impressed by the porters and their standard of service and how well they worked as a whole group with our guide Kush and his assistant, despite their very different levels of responsibility.

WE really liked the Famous Farm guesthouse and food. The hotel in Bandipur was great but the food too western.

We couldn't fault our guide. He was friendly and informative and great with all ages. He really made the trip for us.

Himalayan Adventure

Fantastic trip to and around Nepal - crammed full with experiences and sights. Everything went smoothly and we felt very well looked after. All the guides were excellent - knowledgeable, friendly, helpful. The investment by Himalayan Encounters into local hotels, staff and community schemes was impressive and it made the holiday feel like part of something sustainable. Our main guide, Kush, was absolutely brilliant. He was the best possible family guide that could be imagined - he made friends with all the children and kept them busy and their spirits up, and he met all the questions and needs of the adults equally well. His enthusiasm, sense of humour and knowledge of his country and colleagues made the holiday a stand-out experience - way more than 10 out of 10!!

Would have happily spent another day or two on the trek to get a little further into the hills, and another day in the Chitwan for a longer jungle safari.

Kush is an outstanding group leader/guide, and especially for a family group. He kept everyone's spirits and energy up, he got to know all our names and things about us very quickly, he sorted all the arrangements quickly and efficiently, and he was an excellent representative for his country. We learned a great deal about Nepal and  Nepalese life from Kush. His unfailing sense of humour, and the energy that he put into making everything go well, made the trip truly memorable.

Rainbow Nation

The safari drives in the Kruger National Park were fantastic, made all the better by the extensive knowledge and patience of our guides, Johnny and Charlotte.

[Least enjoyed] The visit to Pilgrim's Rest and the panning for gold experience. This was a bit wasted on us - the least authentic experience in the whole trip.

Our two group leaders, Johnny and Charlotte were fantastic and they had a big part in making it the wonderful holiday it turned out to be. I would have no hesitation recommending them or re-booking a holiday if I knew they were going to be in charge. They constantly worked hard to make sure we got the most out of our holiday.

Journey to the Lost City - Family Holiday

The highlights of the trip were:

Petra - having seen it in photos and movies I thought I might be underwhelmed by the reality.  Far from it though.  The kids loved being in places where their favourite movies had been filmed - Transformers 2, Indiana Jones 3.

Wadi Rum - the desert is spectacular and the private bedouin camp a fantastic experience.  The kids helped Mahmood, the excellent camp host, to collect firewood, build the fire and cook dinner.  The 4x4 jeep ride through the desert was great fun along with climbing onto the rock bridge.

Amer, our group leader throughout our stay, made the trip especially magical.  Nothing was too much bother for him and time was never an issue.  He is so proud and passionate about his country and delights in sharing as much or as little information about Jordanian life, custom, culture and history as you want.  We came back with a much better understanding of Jordan and the Middle East as a whole.  He is great with kids - they loved him.  He took us to some great restaurants - every meal was delicious and fine tuned the itinerary to match our interests.  We felt completely safe throughout our stay, not least of all because of Amer's confident leadership and our driver, Khamal's, good driving. Amer is clearly very well connected on the tourist circuit - everyone seems to know him - and this had clear advantages to our group.  He made the trip for us!

Don't pack too much for this trip - you won't use it and it'll be a hassle dragging your bags around. Its a relaxed style of travel so clothing does not need to be formal. Do check out dress codes for Jordan to avoid causing offence. Do ask for a trip on which Amer is your guide!

Tunisian Voyager

The Camel trek into the Sahara and camping out under the stars was a great experience, well all loved it.

The tour leader, a Tunisian lady, Sonia, was great, making sure we were safe and looked after all the time.  She's a walking encyclopaedia of Tunisian history, and made a real difference to the holiday.

As we were one family, we had a personal tour which was great. We can't understand why so few English people are travelling in Tunisia as the French are everywhere in numbers. The Tunisian people we met were all friendly and helpful, and left us with a great feeling of respect for them as a Nation. They have managed to change things positively without the problems currently evident in other arab countries, and we experienced far less hassle here than in Morocco or Egypt.

Our trip was really good, we were well looked after by our guide Tuyen who was engaging and knowledgeable as well as a great hit with the children.
Our particular highlights were the trip to Halong Bay and the Mekong delta homestay along with the fortune teller in the village near Hue and the bicycle rides in the countryside near Hoi An.
Hue and Hoi an - for myself
Mekong, Halong Bay and Chu Chi tunnels and cycle rides - for our daughter

The flight to Hanoi and the return journey were of course very long and tiring.

The itinerary was packed with so many interesting experiences and activities that it did not seem tiring. We would have liked an extra day or two in Hoi An for R&R

The hotels were all clean and in good locations. Breakfast varied from hotel to hotel but in general was of a good standard. Staff were efficient and polite

Tuyen was hard working, organised and knowledgeable about the localities. We felt safe in the knowledge that he had everything under control. We found him to be sociable and engaging with both children and adults. He was the best tour leader or equivalent we have ever met on holiday. We are sure we got more out of this trip than we would have because of his skills and knowledge.

Tuyen did a great job in giving advice and pointing out specific local projects that benefited local communities, the disabled and locally owned businesses. This meant we spent our holiday money for the benefit of local communities.
