Saharan Sands - Family holiday

Morocco is a fascinating and intoxicating country, full of vibrant colours and glorious scenery.   My eight year old son and I enjoyed every minute of our Saharan Sands holiday, which delivered some unforgettable moments:  Singing the Hokey Cokey, in a tent in the desert, with a team of camelteers; enjoying fantastic food, cooked by our own chef and drinking endless glasses of gorgeously aromatic mint tea; sleeping in a tent made from camel hair; watching the sun set over the dunes and seeing the kids slide down the sand like they were sledging.

Our guide, Mohamed was superb, possessing an encyclopedic knowledge of his homeland, along with boundless energy.  He was able to switch from talking about Moroccan politics, with the adults, to playing an obscure form of Moroccan desert football, with the children, in an instant.

My one (very minor) criticism of this holiday is that, although we enjoyed the busy pace, it would have been nice to have had one more afternoon of rest and relaxation. However, we will certainly be booking another trip with The Adventure Company.

Saharan Sands - Family holiday

The landscape of Morocco was amazing. Every area we visited was different. Mountains, deserts, lush green fields and the martian type interior were all a feast for the eyes.  The Sahara desert was an fantastic highlight and it was wonderful to sleep under the stars. The kids loved climbing up and down the sand dunes. I would throughally recommend a visit.

Our tour leader Mohamed Hjira was an excellent guide and host. He couldn't have been bettered. Calm, articulate, knowledgeable and very friendly.

Feluccas & Pharaohs - Family Holiday

My youngest son in particular cannot stop talking about the different gods and how they were represented in the temple carvings

Walid was absolutely magnificent and made the trip a truly unforgettably experience.  His English was excellent and he provided complete clarity on where we had to be when.  His knowledge of the various sites that we visited was second-to-none and he had a very engaging way of explaining the complexities which really brought it all to life particularly for the children (my youngest son in particular cannot stop talking about the different gods and how they were represented in the temple carvings).  He demonstrated incredible patience with the kids and really took the time to answer their questions.

Walid had a real passion for his “job” and put in a huge amount of discretionary effort to ensure the trip went smoothly and that we all got a positive experience.

Cannot sing his praises loudly enough – top guy and will definitely recommend to others.

Croatian River Adventure - Family Holiday

We had a lovely week and all absolutely loved Croatia, the scenery, friendliness of the local people and food were superb.

The holiday activities were very poor, we went with 3 teenage boys and were hoping for thrills & possibly a little danger to keep them happy and busy - the activities were very tame & seemed to spend our whole time paddling at a very slow pace. The white water rafting day was good & we all enjoyed it immensely but we have also rafted in the French Alps and that was by far superior to the Cetina River. We've also mountain biked in the Alps and the boys were hoping for off road and excitement but it was 15k cycling around villages on the road.

If you're looking for adventure then i would definitely not recommend this holiday - but if you want lovely countryside and an organised low key event, usually followed by a fantastic lunch, each day then this holiday is ideal

We had an excellent holiday overall, mainly because of the other families - all had teenage children, so the kids were all happy together - if we had been with families of children aged 8-12, then the holiday would have been a disaster.

Oh and having the final day off as a relaxing day, is a bit of a joke - there is absolutely nothing to do in Trilj & unless Damir our guide had organised for us to go to Split i don't know what we would've done

Damir, was excellent - he looked after us and showed the kids the perfect places to go swimming and jump into the water. He's a local guy and his knowledge and the info he had to tell us on places was fantastic. He got all the kids hiking up a hill to look at a church, don't know how he did it but he did (no way would mine have hiked up a hill if we'd asked them) & they all enjoyed it as he found local insects & interesting gravestones for them

Nothing was too much trouble, a real asset to Adventure Company

Elephant Paradise - Family Holiday

This was our first holiday with The Adventure Company and we intended it as the big 'final' holiday with the kids (our children being aged 17 and 20). We picked Sri Lanka as although we'd travelled extensively in Europe and the US we'd never been to Asia or the Indian subcontinent. We wanted to experience the colour, smells and culture of a different continent but hadn't the time or confidence  to piece together a trip from scratch. So we put ourselevs in the hands of The Adventure Company. The decision was completely vindicated.

From the moment we were met off the plane by our representatiuve Pathi (pronounced Patty) he looked after everything, smoothed our way, sorted out problems of our own making (including an early and potentially disastrous problem with our luggage), accomodated our various likes and dislikes and generally made the holiday totally wonderful for us and our kids. If I say that our kids usually emerge from bed at not much before lunchtime but that on this holiday they were springing out of bed at 6am so that he could take us for a great mornings exporing before we hit the pool, you can tell how much of a hit he was. He was always around, no matter what we needed. Fantastic.

Sri Lanka itself was a revelation. We haven't been to India but some people describe Sri Lanka as India with a soft landing and without the overcrowding. In fact only 20 milion people live in the country so unless you are on a train (of which more later) it doesn't feel too in-your-face. The holiday involves quite a bit of travel but it's worth it as there is so much to see and so many different climates packed into a relatively small country. On one day we were in a jungle in the morning and getting refreshingly drenched in a rain forest that afternoon. Some days we were in the dry zone where water is carefully conserved in huge and beautiful man made lakes, and on others we were walking in cool tea plantations or crossing savanna style areas roamed by wild elephants and buffalo.

The history of Sri Lanka is equally interesting. We visited at least three ancient cities where the capital of Sri Lanka had resided for extensive periods, and as a result there were plentiful ruined palaces and huge ancient towns, some stretching back to 400-500 AD. Some, like the mountain plateau palace at Sigiriya, (approached incidentally, via a mountain path past some very active hornets nests that required us to don beekeepers outfits!) were absolutely spectacular. Buddhist and Hindu temples abound, with huge carved reliefs of Buddha everywhere. The wars between the Hindu Tamils and the Buddhist Singalese majority, that have blighted countless lives and the tourist trade are now over (although the impact on the Tamils is still felt) and the people are extremely warm and friendly. While you are there you get to ride an Elephant, which is fun, but grab a ride in one of the omnipresent three wheeler Tuk Tuks, and even travel a couple of stops on the most overcrowded trains you'll travel in. They make the Tube look airy and spacious, but these are are the sort of more spontaneous experiences that make the holiday so memorable. Oh, and the dusk flight of the fruit bats is extraordinary!

Pathi was fantastic. There for us all the time. He drove the minibus, sorted out our problems (of which there weren't many), advised us on what was and wasn't expected or advisable, and was a constant guide on what we were seeing, or experiencing. We would not have anjoyed the holiday anything like as much without him.

Try a bit of everything. Wander the markets, watch the fruit bats at dusk, ride a train and a tuk tuk at least once. Get up early so you see struff and then relax in the afternoon or in the van. Ask where the milk is from. We avoided milk for the first hal;f of the holiday until we realised that much of it comes from reputable dairies (a bit like Unigate) and is pasteurised and no problem. But drink bottled water and avoid ice cubes etc. We didn't get much in the way of stomach aches or sickness (i was only mildly off colour on one day) but it was probably because we took precautions.

Spirit of the Incas

Excellent trip in Peru - guide Juan was really good. As we were the only family he was very flexible and tailored the trip well.Really appreciated the overnight stay in Macchu Picchu so that could visit the site outside the main daytripper times. Enjoyed Lake Titicaca and coach journey from Puno to Cusco.Galapagos- thoroughly enjoyed by wildlife-loving husband. We all enjoyed snorkelling, Guide on San Jose boat was OK.Sacha Lodge excellent - lots of activities and really good convivial atmosphere. Dann Carlton Quito was a really good choice for a stop-over hotel.

[Least enjoyed] Slightly worried one night on San Jose boat due to rough crossing. We hadn't had a safety briefing as we joined the tour half way through the week. Flight from Quito- Madrid involved getting off plane after 30 mins flight to Guayaquil then 3 hrs sitting in Guayaquil airport before getting back on and flying back over Quito!

Very good itinerary!

Juan in Peru was excellent as was Sacha lodge guide. Guide in Galapagos was OK but didn't spend any time at all on the scientific importance of the nature there - he merely pointed out birds and animals but didn't put them in context at all. Transfer guide in Quito (Andean travel company)was pleasant but seemed disorganised (late a couple of times), she also insisted on us completing the Quito city tour even though we were the only family on it and we asked to finish it early as we had had a 4.45 start from Cusco that morning.

**** Comment from The Adventure Company ****

We have contacted our local agent to ensure that all passengers receive a safety briefing on the boat for all future trips.

Cowboys & Indians Discovery - Family holiday

The guide was excellent and the composition of the trip was superb.

The quality of the accommodation in Las Vegas and at the Grand Canyon was disappointing. Also we thought the choice of Pinguitch for the Bryce overnight was very strange. Not en route and a motel which was far more suitable for the manual workers staying there than for a family group. The variability of the accommmodation was the main disappointment about the trip overall.

The guide kept everyone enthusiastic and found expert tour guides for the different excursions and sorted out trailer lunches which usefully saved us a lot of money overall.

I have outlined above my reservations about the quality of the accommodation in three of the stops. I strongly think that an alternative should be found for the very grotty motel in Pinguitch which was neither on the way nor suitable for family groups. The Red Feather Lodge at Tusayan was also very disappointing. The doors were simply planks for wood - not painted and it was right by the airport with constant noise from the helicopter flights. The Alexis Park at Las Vegas was a long walk from the strip. Although the quality of the service was excellent there the decor was extremely shabby and dated and not at the three star level promised for the trip. The hotels in Page and Zion, the guest ranch and the Monument Valley stops were the standard I would expect from this sort of trip and it was very disappointing there was not a consistent standard overall.

Chris was a very good leader and catered well for the varied group.

We are sorry to hear that the accommodation on the trip did not meet expectations. We have passed these comments on to Grand American Adventures for their information and action.

Tatra Teenage Mountains

A dissapointing arrival in slovakia with the train arriving  at 6.00am and then having to wait around for the hotel to get us into rooms and being given  "free time" when there was not alot within the village. an activity could have been organised even a short hike to bond the group. instead the tour guide was embarred and left for a couple of hours and the children amused themselves on mobiles etc. while some adults wandered off into town . This first introduction could have spolit the start of the holiday. this first day was really wasted.

The rafting was quite tame.

[Accommodation] I believe we were upgraded and it was very good.

Matte was excellent. It was he who sorted out the transfer from the train stn in prague to the airport a good touch from his end a shame that it was not done via the adventure company

***** Comment from The Adventure Company ******

We have asked our product team to look into whether an activity can be arranged for the morning of arrival in Slovakia so that people can have the opportunity to do something while waiting for hotel rooms to be ready.

We are sorry to hear that the rafting was too tame. This was always intended to be a gentle rafting activity but on reviewing our brochure it appears that the wrong photo was used that would give the impression that the rafting was more exciting than it is.

Croatian River Adventure - Family Holiday

Damir our guide was excellent, made our holiday run smoothly and without hitch

We did the Croatian River Adventure which overall we were very disappointed with - the level of excitement in the activities was very poor.  Didn't spoil our holiday as our kids made friends with the kids there but if they hadn't this would have been a disastrous holiday.  Put more exciting activities into this please

The last day was a free day, there is absolutely nothing to do in Trilj unless organised which thankfully our host Damir did, he didn't have his day off and took us all into Split, which it appears he does every week.  Worth scheduling in another activity as the kids would rather have done that than spend a day in a city

Hotel basic but clean and comfortable.  Staff very helpful - the only recommendation i could give would be to have some outside seating by the river as nowhere to sit outside in the sun in the late afternoon, early evening

Excellent

***** Comment from The Adventure Company ******

While customers have previously told us the activity level was right for this trip, this year the rating does seem to be dropping. We are reviewing customer feedback on this – if customers are looking for something more exhilarating, we can change the activities to provide this. The only consideration beyond this is the minimum age for the trip. It is currently 8 years old so we do need to make sure that what we offer accommodates all age ranges and abilities as best as we can.

Land of the Lemurs - Family Holiday

The local guide (Mike) who was superb, knowledgeable and efficient + very patient when trying to juggle all our needs and requirements.

[Least enjoyed] There was too much travelling for the time available and the group was larger than advertised (18 instead of 16) which meant it took longer to board bus etc. The itinerary needs carefully evaluating as our's was the first trip. Our guide said the Adventure Company were made aware that it was alot of time on the bus. Also some of the advertised stops were not possible and again the guide said AC knew this - but the itinerary was not changed. The trip is not suitable for under 8s probably even under 10 due to the amount of travelling and the nature of some of the activities. The 7 year old in our group struggled. Air Madagascar flights are not reliable and again this needs reviewing.

It was a fantastic trip but I strongly advise you to carefully reconsider the itinerary.

We did not stay in a tented lodge as stated on itinerary - not sure why not. One hotel was grim with toilets not working, no bath plug etc. Looked like a remnant from Communist days....

He was superb - without his knowledge, patience and good humour the trip would not have been as enjoyable.

***** Comment from The Adventure Company ******

The tour size was increased to 18 due to an oversight. We would normally contact all clients to ensure that they are happy with the group size increase. We are putting systems into place to ensure that this does not happen again.

We do mention in our literature that there are long drives involved but we will review our literature to make sure that this is clearer.

Following this feedback we have now increased the minimum age to 8.
