Top 5 reasons to keep smiling about Thailand
For a country that has the reputation for being incredibly friendly and welcoming, the news about the military coup in Thailand is concerning. No one knows if the military leaders will look to re-establish a democratic political system in a few months … or how the country will settle.
However … what I do know is that I have just returned from the family holiday of a lifetime. With my wife and 3 kids we re-discovered our wanderlust.
Here are my ‘Top 5 reasons to keep smiling about Thailand’:
1. Bathing a rescued elephant
There are special days as a parent – moments when you get to watch your child experience and celebrate the beauty of the natural world that we inhabit. Bathing a rescued ‘chang’ at the Elephant Nature Park in Mae Taeng Valley was one of those days. A shared moment - one we will all remember forever.
2. The ultimate balance of adventure and relaxation
Our family spent half the trip learning about Buddhism in amongst the many temples, stupas and chedis. We met the monks, performed ritual blessings and even sounded the temple bells. The other half of the holiday was spent relaxing and playing by pool after pool. We enjoyed the ultimate balance of adventure and relaxation.
3. Life jackets on and get ready for the ride
Bangkok is a hustling and bustling modern commercial capital. It is also home to amazing historic markets, stilt temples and local residential zones that are hidden down the many klongs (waterways) of the city. There’s no better way to explore than with a local guide in a long tailed boat. Life jackets on and get ready for your adrenaline ride!
4. A day jumping into waterfalls
Ask the kids to nominate the best day of their holiday and small faces light up when they describe Erawan National Park. Just a 1 hour drive from Kanchanaburi this seven tiered waterfall and natural pool complex provides the perfect escape from the summer heat. When did you last spend a full day jumping in and out of waterfalls with your kids?
5. Trains, Planes & Cyclo-Rickshaws
How you travel is half the adventure … and at least half the family fun. We knew the transport would be varied but we were still genuinely excited by … the two overnight train journeys in first class sleepers, hopping between the major sights in multiple tuk tuks, a private transfer by cyclo rickshaw and the market walking tours.
We would go back tomorrow if we had the chance (+ the annual leave!). Thailand’s friendly reputation is well deserved and we really did have an amazing family adventure.
Land of Smiles ... Yes please.
