Insider's view: An Indian Summer
My name is Sheikh Junaid and I lead some of The Adventure Company's India trips.
India is such a diverse country that no matter what time of year you visit you will have something different to experience. With weather changing, you will find fragnances change, colours change, lifestyle change, and you will never have less to see and admire. From mid of April every year it starts to heat up a bit with summer coming but this year it has just been beautiful. The temperature has been moderate with very low humidity levels and it has comparatively been cooler but bright and sunny as always. This year met department has forecasted a normal monsoon which means occasional showers will keep the temp down and mercury will not rise too much. The Tiger sightings at the Sawai Mansingh Sanctuary (Alternate park for summers - now part of the main Ranthambore National park) have improved considerably with more chances of seeing one. The landscape is, of course beautiful with one single shower in the summer turning the whole park lush green! In summers, we try our best to do the sightseeing tours during cooler times of the day (morning or late afternoon) and games drives are always early morning and late evenings giving you ample time to dive in to the pool or getting a spa or a massage done.
We are in to summer now, as said above the temp has been moderate with low humidity levels. The entire month of April has been simply beautiful. We are expecting a normal and timely monsoon this summer (July/August) which will help to keep the mercury level down. The showers are occasional and otherwise its nice and warm.
Tiger spotting this summer - Lots of our guests on trips this April have sighted Tiger(s) in Ranthambore (NI & FNI) and in Kanha and Bandhavgarh (IW). The main parks remain open till end of June every year and then remain closed for Monsoon (JULY, AUGUST & SEPTEMBER). On our NI & FNI Trips we visit Sawai Mansingh park (which is now part of the main park) which remains open in monsoon as well. This particular zone has seen considerably improved Tiger sightings. Some of our guests have spotted Tiger here as well this April. The Forest department is conducting a Tiger census in Ranthambore National Park on May 6 and May 7, 2012 and we will then have more accurate numbers. The good news is that we have somewhere around 15 new cubs in the park!!! The numbers per previous census were around 38 Tigers in the park.
Summer is a nice time to visit India and to get some sun. Come out from a wet weather over to a warm, bright and sunny weather. It is less busy making it easier for you to see some of the busiest sights with calm including the Marvel in Marble - TAJ MAHAL. In fact, one of the best times to see a proper sunrise or a proper sunset is in summer indeed. Perhaps, do a Goa beach extension or a special Shimla Extension with a toy train journey.
Lastly, in India, we say women dress like Peacock and Men like Peehen! India is one of the most unique countries in the world where you find bits of everything right from wildlife, diverse culture, loads of history, world heritage sights and monuments and friendly and courteous people. Every 50 Kms you travel you see something different, languages change/dialects change, dressings change, landscape change etc. The dust, fragnance, smells, colours, landscape and of course, it's people is the charm of India.
