India's stunning architecture left me amazed
The old saying that "slow and steady wins the race" tends to ring true in many aspects of life and this is certainly the case when it comes to climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, as I found out. There are a number of different ways to get to the top of the famous African mountain and each route requires a certain level of commitment and physical fitness.
I discovered that the Rongai Route - although the most drawn out and least direct way to scale the mountain - was ultimately the most rewarding. Only a certain number of people who have booked Tanzania holidays are permitted to take this particular trek and if you are one of the lucky ones, you are undoubtedly in for a big treat.
The ten-day excursion was absolutely fantastic from start to finish, as we attempted to conquer Kilimanjaro from the north-eastern side of the landmark. It felt like we were almost sneaking up on the mountain as we were virtually alone, with other trips taking very different approach routes. This added to the sense of calm and tranquillity and allowed us to appreciate the stunning scenery far more.
One of the main highlights of taking this less strenuous avenue was the chance to see the superb Masai lands, which is not possible from the more well-trodden paths. This was important to me, as I believe that if you have travelled to Africa, you really must make every effort to see wild monkeys, rhinos, elephants and buffalos. After all, if you visited Agra you wouldn't leave before you had seen the Taj Mahal and if you went to Cairo, it would be crazy not to take in the pyramids.
Overall, the Rongai Route provided everything that I had wanted and much more. It had enabled me to climb one of the world's most famous mountains without having to chance my questionable fitness on one of the less forgiving paths. More importantly than that, it gave me views and memories that I will cherish forever.
