Is it safe to travel to Egypt?

Following demonstrations in Cairo and other parts of Egypt, and the news that President Mohammed Morsi has been removed from power, you may be wondering if it is still safe to travel to Egypt - especially if you have booked a trip to Egypt that departs in the next few weeks.

Currently, the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) is advising against non-essential travel to Cairo and other affected areas, but it is not currently advising against travel to the Red Sea resorts and Southern Sinai, which are considered safe to travel to.

When we visited Saadani National Park, the thing I was most surprised by was how many game drives we went on. I was expecting to go on a few, but not get into the jeep every day! They were so much fun. We learnt something different every day. For example, one day we would take camera traps disguised as pieces of tree and position them in popular areas like waterholes, that animals went. Then, at the end of the week we all collected our camera traps and had a look at what we had got.

1. You must remember to take your malaria pills every day - swallow them with a banana is the easiest way.

2. Just as we did at Longleat Safari Park in the UK, when we went on the Longleat Family African Safari we took a pair of binoculars to spot giraffes and even smaller animals.

3. It’s a good idea to remember to bring a torch because Africa can be very dark at night.

4. Don't be surprised if an elephant charges at you - but don't panic at any stage. Ask the driver to return to the road if necessary.
