Welcome to the mountain
Head still spinning from my excursion I return to my hotel for my kit check and final briefing before the mountain. Time to focus! Back to Kilimanjaro!
All kit correct and accounted for I meet my fellow climbers, a couple from Canada and a couple from America, (there are two more at another hotel who we will meet at the gates) and our guide for our 9 day assault on the mountain, Faraja. We learn of our route and for the first time since I was about 9 years old I’m told what to wear! I decide on an early night tonight, not that it helps me much as I lie awake, nervous and excited, wondering…what if I don’t make it????
I wake in my princess bed for the last time, tonight I’ll be bedding down in a tent, my new home for just over a week! After a hardy breakfast we all gather in reception, ready to start our adventure…3 hours later, having signed our lives away we reach the gate (or tiny path into the jungle) and it all begins (well after a yummy lunch of course!)
The jungle is beautiful, I expect Tarzan to come swinging through the trees at any moment, huge trees draped in moss cover the skyline, fire ants scurry around our feet and monkeys play happily in the trees over head. The route is not too steep, as much down as up, or so it seems and 3.5 hours later we arrive at camp 1500 ft higher than we started at the trail head. We head to bed early, monkeys still playing overhead as tomorrow is a going to be a tough day.
