What makes a good explorer? Is it curiosity, stamina or ambition? Our ambassador Ben Fogle has been an adventurer for years and his recent exploits have seen him take it to the next level but what is it that drives him?

Come and join Ben at the Royal Geographical Society on 31 May 2012 as he relives his recent Year of Adventure. Ben travelled all over the world testing his own limits of endurance, strength and agility. In America, he swam the mile-and-a-half from Alcatraz Island to San Francisco Bay, he made the terrifying 400 foot climb up the iconic sandstone Castleton Tower in Utah, went canyoneering in the Utah desert, and climbed California’s redwood trees. If that wasn't enough Ben took part in the Three Peaks Alpine Run through the Dolomites of Italy, paraglided over the mountains and competed in the Gascoyne Dash Desert Race and the Anaconda Adventure Race downunder. Ben ran, swam, cycled and paddled his way to victory along the South Australian coastline.

During his 50 minute talk Ben will talk you through his amazing Year of Adventure, giving you insight into what challenged him, the characteristics he relied upon to succeed and how you too can discover the adventurer within you. Following the talk there's plenty of opportunities to ask Ben questions, talk to him and get a book signed in the stunning Map Room at the RGS.

This is your chance to quiz Ben on what really went on behind the scenes when the camera's were off, how scared he really was climbing a 400ft sandstone tower and if he was worried about freezing to death when diving under a glacier in Iceland. It's not every day you get to meet a real life explorer and adventurer.
