Off the beaten track

We make it our business to find untouched, remote places that aren’t full of tourists and over-crowded hotels.
Travelling in a small group allows you to discover those special places and enable you to make genuine contact with local people. On our trips, the average group maximum is just 14, and we never exceed 16. That means better service for you, the chance to use smaller hotels, more freedom to reach out-of-the-way places
and more of a sense of camaraderie and fun within the group.

Its like travelling with a group of friends

Similar types of people are attracted to our style of travel, so you’ll have plenty in common with other members of the group before you even meet. Plus there’s nothing like a challenge to bring people together - a night in a tribal village, going dog-sledding for the first time or a trek over a high pass in the Himalayas.

Who will I be travelling with?

Our trips appeal to a wide variety of ages. The average is 38 – with most being aged between 25 and 55. This range of ages is a real plus, bringing a totally different perspective to almost every conversation and to most things you see on your trip. If you are over 65 and active, you are most welcome on our trips - but we’ll need you to provide details of your recent travel experiences. You will not be able to travel on these trips if you are under 14, but you could join one of our special Family Adventures which also now have dedicated teenage’ departures (please contact us for a brochure).

Travelling solo

Over half of our bookings are from people travelling by themselves and the composition of most groups is a very even split between men and women. One of the great benefits of our trips is they allow you to be independent and travel the world, but also provide security (particularly if you are a single woman) and company whenever you choose.

Single room option

If you are travelling on your own you will automatically be ‘roomed’ with a fellow member of the group of the same-sex. There is absolutely no need to pay any additional supplement for travelling as a single person. However we do offer the chance to book a single room on many trips if you prefer to. Those trips where this is possible are marked in the prices and availability area on the website or you can ask one of our Travel Consultants. On some trips, this single room option may not be for the whole duration – please call us for details. With The Adventure Collection brochure we have implemented a single supplement charge, however, if you request it, we will endeavour to pair you with another member of the same sex to share a twin-bedded room - and if this is possible we will refund the single supplement. If this is not possible then there will be a charge for the single occupancy of rooms.

What about age group?

The trips in our main 'Worldwide Adventures' brochure appeal to a wide variety of ages. The average is 38 – with most being aged between 25 and 55. This range of ages is a real plus, bringing a totally different perspective to almost every conversation and to most things you see on your trip. Once you’re on the trip, you’ll find like-minded people who are basically young at heart and it’s unlikely you’ll even think about what age everyone is. If, like a number of our clients, you are over 65 and active, you are most welcome on our trips, but we do need you to provide details of your recent travel experience and current state of health – this helps us to advise you on the suitability of the trip you wish to take. If you are aged between 14 and 17 you must be accompanied by an adult to join one of our Worldwide Adventures(i.e. a parent or guardian aged over 21 and nominated by the minor’s parent(s) as the person responsible for caring for them during the trip).

How fit do I have to be?

Any healthy adult with an adventurous nature and a desire to get away from the ‘tourist herd’ can travel with us. You don’t have to be super-fit, and age isn’t that important either - it’s attitude that counts. You can choose an easy-going trip which concentrates on places, scenery or culture. Alternatively, pick a more challenging journey, which may involve trekking, mountain walking, river-rafting or some other physical activity. The choice is yours - you can be as adventurous as you want to be!

Guaranteed departures

Please note that many of our popular trips are now ‘guaranteed to depart’ once a booking is made on them. If you a regular traveller you may be aware that, as with any tour operator or airline, departures are cancelled occasionally. Our GUARANTEED DEPARTURE policy means that you can book your trip in total confidence that it will operate. The trips this applies to are clearly marked with a 'Guaranteed Departure' symbol in the top right hand corner of the relevant web page. If for any reason we are unable to keep this promise then we will give you a full refund on your trip AND 50% off a future trip.

Value for Money

Our trips offer incredibly good value for money. The prices include your flights, lots of sightseeing, entrance fees to famous sights and places of interest, transport, accommodation, most meals, professional group
leaders and excellent personal service before, during and after you travel.

Freedom to explore

Some of the best things in life involve the unexpected, so we won't plan everything for you. You’ll be provided with a framework that enables you to visit the places you expect to see, as well as time, and flexibility, to make your own discoveries.

Meticulous planning

Every trip is planned down to the very last detail. We know what is worth putting into an itinerary, and what to leave out. We know about the hidden gems that few people ever get to hear about. And we know about the quirks and vagaries of local transport schedules so we can plan your trip to avoid hassles and delays.

Balance & variety

Our trips are planned to strike a balance between activity and relaxation - a typical holiday will involve a mixture of culture, walking, wildlife, local transport, contact with local people and the opportunity to explore the major sites and off the beaten track ‘little-known’ places.

Grades of Trip

We want to provide you with really genuine insights into the country you are visiting – its people, wildlife, culture, food, environment... We do this by planning itineraries carefully to avoid mass-tourism hotspots and building in the kind of experiences that could take months of travelling to stumble across if travelling independently. As well as the must-see sights we’ll take you off the beaten track whenever possible and introduce you to ways of life that may be totally different to your own. This is what adventure travel is all about. If you want a sterile, homogenised holiday where everything is just like a picture-postcard, then think again before booking. Although we’ll make life as comfortable as possible while you travel, there might be times when you see aspects of a country that you had never even considered before. This can come as quite a culture-shock sometimes, but very often these moments will be what you remember for years to come. A ‘change of perspective’ to the way you think often occurs when you take up a challenge and move out of your ‘comfort zone’. Enjoy it, life’s an adventure!

Character Accommodation

You’ll stay in small hotels with local character - not too basic, but with no unnecessary frills either. We often use hotels which reflect something of the area you’re travelling to, or how local people live. So you might spend a night or two in a tribal longhouse in Borneo, a log cabin in Quebec, a thatched banda on the coast of Tanzania, an adobe house on Lake Titicaca in Peru...

In some places off the beaten track there may not be much choice, so you may have to rough it now and again. It’s usually worth going without creature comforts for a night or two in order to reach somewhere special or unique. We choose accommodation on the basis of value for money, rather than economy. It will generally have twin rooms with private facilities, in small, clean, family-run, tourist-class hotels. At times you’ll stay in larger, more comfortable hotels, or in rustic accommodation with few facilities. Sometimes we also camp. Indeed some trips will be a combination of all of these! When camping, you will usually be provided with everything you need except for a sleeping bag and sleeping mat.

Our choice of accommodation also depends on what will help you to get the best out of the region. Location and atmosphere are important factors, and sometimes a little comfort is sacrificed to be in a prime position. However, after roughing it for a day or so, we compensate with better facilities wherever possible. You will often stay in places where the revenue generated by your stay can directly benefit the local community.

Prices are based on sharing a twin room, so if you’re travelling alone, unless you pay for a Single Room Option, you’ll be paired with another member of the same sex to share a twin-bedded room. Occasionally, we use multiple-share or dormitory accommodation - particularly when staying in traditional buildings, village houses, or small hotels in remote places.

Variety of transport

How you get to a place is half the adventure! That’s why we use so many different forms of transport on our trips: from minibuses to 4WD vehicles; local buses to trains; ferries to dugout canoes; even rickshaws, elephants, donkeys and camels! This variety provides excitement and interest, and creates a more authentic experience.

Most trips use a small chartered bus, but public transport is used wherever we can - especially trains, buses and boats – so that we can mix with local people and avoid the "goldfish-bowl" effect. Our trips are about providing genuine contact with local people at grass-roots level. What better way to experience this than as a fellow traveller?
